Buying Tips for Parents: Choosing Safe Hearing Protection for Kids
Protecting your child’s hearing is just as important as protecting their eyes or skin. Across Australia, kids are exposed to loud noise at school sports days, motorsport events, concerts, and even in the classroom. Prolonged or repeated noise exposure can cause permanent hearing damage—but the right hearing protection can make all the difference.

What to Look For
1. Choose earmuffs made for children.
Adult earplugs don’t usually fit smaller ear canals. Look for child-sized earmuffs or kids’ hearing defenders—available online or at safety suppliers across Australia. They’re easier to put on, stay secure, and give consistent noise protection.
2. Prioritise comfort and proper fit.
The best earmuffs are the ones your child will actually wear. A higher Noise Reduction Rating (NRR) provides more protection, but comfort is key. Go for soft, padded cups and adjustable bands so they can wear them longer without discomfort.
3. Let them choose their style!
Children are far more likely to wear hearing protection when they like how it looks. Many Aussie brands offer kids’ earmuffs in bright colours, sparkles, or racing designs. If your child loves the look, they’ll love wearing them—even if the NRR is slightly lower.
4. Set a good example.
Parents who wear their own hearing protection—whether at work, the racetrack, or live events—show kids that it’s normal and important. Make it a family habit.
Wide Fit Range
- Every child is different. Start with Baby/Toddler size if under 2.5 years.
- For larger toddlers (closer to 3 years), the Kids/Adult size may be a better fit and will last longer.
- Both models ensure safe, comfortable protection at races, concerts, or any noisy environment.

Baby/Toddler Earmuffs
Best for: Infants - Toddlers (6 months - 2.5 yrs)
Some children up to age 5 may still fit depending on head size.

Kids / Adult Earmuffs
Best for: Ages 3 - most adults
Can even fit some 2-year-olds depending on head size.
FAQs
What are the best earmuffs for my child?
“The best earmuffs are the ones your child will actually wear! A higher NRR (Noise Reduction Rating) means more noise is reduced, but comfort and style matter too. If your child prefers a pair with sparkles or fun designs, even if the NRR is a little lower than plain black ones, let them choose the pair they’re excited about.
My child does not like to wear earmuffs. What should I do?
“Let them choose a pair they like! Many kids’ earmuffs come in fun colors and designs. When children get to pick a style that excites them, they’re often much more willing to wear them.”
It also helps if parents set a good example by wearing hearing protection themselves—kids are more likely to follow along when they see you doing the same.”
Do earplugs fit kids?
Standard earplugs are made for adult ear canals, and most children’s ears are too small for them. While smaller earplugs do exist, I only recommend them for kids who are old enough to insert them correctly on their own. Proper fit is very important—many adults don’t even get it right. For guidance, see my tutorials on correct insertion.
